Commentary about this winter, and some winter experiences I have had in Canada.

Mild Weather:
The weather this year has been very mild compared to other winters. Here is an article from Cape May, New Jersey where it is very very cold in January (Shay went to CG boot camp here many years ago in January and was frozen, some lucky recruits this year): http://www.capemaytimes.com/news/2012/01/cape-may-warm-new-year/

Arctic Conditions
Here is a paragraph from details about the Arctic North: December 2011 compared to past years
Arctic sea ice extent for December 2011 was the third lowest in the satellite record. The five lowest December extents in the satellite record have occurred in the past six years. Including the year 2011, the linear rate of decline ice December ice extent over the satellite record is -3.5% per decade. You can read more about this here (From the University of Colorado National Ice and Snow data center) : http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/

Ottawa, the Rideau Canal - longest skating rink in the world. This is my hometown, and usually the canal is long since frozen over, the mild temperatures have prevented this: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/story/2012/01/02/ottawa-rideau-canal-skating.html?cmp=rss They have a festival in February called Winterlude or in french Ball de Neige, they have a ton of beautiful sculptures, and my favorite “beaver tail” - it’s really cinnamon sugar donut - yum.

A cute blog with Beaver tail photos (YUMMY): http://alicesrestaurant-alice.blogspot.com/2011/01/canadian-cuisine-beaver-tails-eh.html
